A History Written in Soil & Leaves
Highwalton Estate in Matale holds a remarkable place in Sri Lanka's agricultural story — one that stretches back over three centuries, from the first Dutch coffee trials to a thriving modern estate.
Dutch Colonial Era
1740
The First Coffee Trials
The Dutch conducted Ceylon's very first systematic coffee cultivation experiments here at Highwalton, Matale — testing whether the island's climate and soil could sustain Arabica coffee saplings brought from Yemen via India.
01British Expansion
1833 – 1870
Ceylon's Coffee Boom
Under British rule, the estate flourished alongside the island's coffee industry. By 1870, over 111,400 hectares were under cultivation across Ceylon, and Highwalton stood as a landmark producer in the Matale highlands.
02The Great Rust
1869 – 1880
Rise of Tea & Rubber
The devastating coffee leaf rust, Hemileia vastatrix, swept the island's plantations. Highwalton adapted, pivoting to tea and rubber cultivation — a resilience that defined the estate's character for generations to come.
