How it all began

History of Highwalton

The first arabica coffee plants were introduced to Ceylon may have arrived from Yemen via India, by Muslim pilgrims in the early 17th century. Even though Coffee Production peaked during the British Ruling, The Dutch were the first to start cultivating coffee despite it being unsuccessful later on.

The Dutch made their first systematic attempt at cultivating coffee in 1740. Before beginning large-scale production, they carried out initial trials at the Highwalton Estate in Matale that same year to evaluate Sri Lanka's climate and soil fertility for growing coffee saplings.

Present Day

Growing Nature, Cultivating Legacy

Originally established during the Dutch colonial period, the Highwalton Estate later thrived under British control, expanding with advanced irrigation and plantation techniques, earning a reputation as a premier tea and rubber estate.

After Sri Lanka's independence, local custodians preserved Highwalton Estate’s heritage while modernizing operations. Today, it embraces sustainable agriculture and eco-tourism, offering a heritage bungalow, organic farming, and guided tours for history and nature enthusiasts.
